April Frugal Foodies ... a huge success!

We had 15 people and 6 amazing recipes for our April 3rd Frugal Foodies. The weather was gorgeous and the sun set as we cooked up "sibling rivalry" recipes, including a summer and winter squash, a summer and winter fettucine pasta, and a summer and winter soup.

All the recipes can be found on the Facebook page:

Frugal Foodies Boston

Next month is May, and there's going to be more desserts than usual. Bring your sweet tooth - I'm hosting again with Jillian Cohen.

And we've already got hosts for June: Jonathan Mitchell & Laura Feldman.

Tell your friends - Frugal Foodies Boston is the most fun cooking night out in Somerville!

April 3rd Frugal Foodies is on!

Hello Foodies! There's nothing like it for messing up your life or driving you to excellence: sibling rivalry. Prepare to hit the culinary big time or spend the evening with an inferiority complex, cuz on Saturday, April 3 our frugal food is gonna come in competitive pairs.

Four teams will be preparing two dishes made from similar DNA with totally different personalities. We'll be exploring the ultimate rivalry between the seasons. As winter relinquishes its hold on our lives and summer vies for our attention, winter squash and summer squash will have it out like an episode of Jerry Springer, and red sauce pasta will ask for mom to intervene when white sauce pasta keeps shooting spit-balls.

We hope you can make it at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 3 at Dan's house at 224 Summer Street #2, Somerville, MA. We encourage you to bring a single friend, and please RSVP for you and any friends as your RSVP gives us license to spend $8 on ingredients. If you need to explain the FF concept to your friend, the recap is below.

Also, you are highly encouraged to bring drinks in theme! Think Sam Adams winter and summer brews; think Rose and Cabernet; think lemonade and hot cider.

See you Saturday!
From your new hosts,
Ben & Liz

Here's the concept:
-About 10-20 people will get together to cook a mostly organic and entirely vegetarian meal, eat, clean-up, and connect with one another. This is not an exclusive club so bring in new people - friends of friends, etc.

-Each event, the Frugal Foodies hosts will buy fresh ingredients for the meal that will be ready for your arrival. The meal that we prepare will always feature four or more dishes but what those dishes are will depend on the particular event's theme. This is not about gourmet so much as it is learning about good new meals and cooking as a group.

-This is not a pot-luck event, except for the optional drinks. So all you need to do is reserve your spot by paying in advance and then show up. The host(s) will arrange for everything else along the way.

Here's how you can get involved:
1. You RSVP to tell me you're coming. That means you promise to bring a small amount of money ($8.00) to help pay for ingredients.

2. You tell other friends, and convince them to come - they RSVP me and promise to bring $8.00.

3. The night of the event, you arrive at 6:30 PM at 224 Summer Street, #2. Bring your $8.00 (cash or check).

4. Bring drinks if you want to drink.

5. We will have picked 3-4 recipes based on a theme and will have already bought the ingredients. We divide up into groups, depending on which recipe you want to cook.

6. You cook with your group, get to know them, talk, drink, have fun.

7. We eat what the groups have cooked!

Sound like fun? Well, then you should sign up! This is now a monthly event - first Saturday of every month. The idea for Frugal Foodies comes from an actual event that takes place weekly in Berkeley (http://www.frugalfoodies.com). It's very fun, and very social. I hope you like the East Coast version.

Saturday March 6th - Making the Boring Sexy!

When you think of sexy, do you think of the dawn of spring--the rebirth of once-dormant emotions and passions, and the flowering of ecstasy? Do you think of hot summer nights, little tank-tops and sweaty muscles? Not us. We think of early March. Frozen mud. Cold, sleety rain. Short days. The Ides.

This Saturday, join Frugal Foodies #3 with a night of making the boring sexy. We will take 5 dishes that you might think are boring - like porridge, for example - and make it provocative. Inviting. Sexy. We call them sexipes. And if you grace FF with your presence, be prepared to do things to porridge that you did not know could be done, to take porridge to places porridge did not know it could go.

Additionally, we hope you will wear clothing that at first glance could be seen as boring--t-shirt and jeans? But wait! Oh, yeah! That's SEXY! And finally, we encourage you to bring a single friend that we have not met before. Because some people think that strangers are boring. But no, they're sexy.

We hope you can make it at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 6th at Dan's house at 224 Summer Street, #2, Somerville, MA. Let us know if you'll be coming and which sexy friend you'll be bringing so we know how much food to buy. Remember, your RSVP gives us license to spend $8 towards making the mundane spicy and titillating.

If you need to explain the FF concept to your friend, the recap is below.

See you Saturday!
